Andrew Lloyd Webber (1948-): The Phantom of the Opera (1986)

No discussion of Broadway would be complete without mentioning Andrew Lloyd Webber, the most successful musical composer ever, at least in terms of profits and public recognition. Lloyd Webber's list of hit musicals is even longer than that of Rodgers and Hammerstein: among them are Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), Evita (1976), Cats (1981), Starlight Express (1984), and The Phantom of the Opera (1986). Like Bernstein and Sondheim, Lloyd Webber was classically trained musically, attending Oxford University and the Royal Academy of Music in London. But unlike his American competitors, who added modernist elements to their music, Lloyd Webber brought an essentially Romantic sound to his musicals. We all remember Don't Cry for Me Argentina (Evita), Memory (Cats) and Music of the Night (The Phantom of the Opera) because Lloyd Webber gave us what most of us wanted to hear: beautiful, aria-like melodies, rich Romantic orchestrations with powerful brass and undulating strings. He combined this with spectacular staging created by director Tim Rice and a winning idiom. Indeed, The Phantom of the Opera achieved a success unprecedented in the history of musicals, making its composer a billionaire. The Phantom of the Opera premiered in London in 1986 and then in New York in 1988, and is the longest-running Broadway musical, performing more than 10,000 times in front of 14.5 million spectators in New York alone. With enchanting songs like "Music of the Night," "Thinking of Me" and "All I Ask of You," the show is full of audience appeal: 2011 was its most profitable year yet in New York, with revenues of approximately $44.8 million. Worldwide, the musical has been performed in 145 cities in 27 countries, with revenues of approximately $560 million.

"Worldwide" may be the key word here. Originally, Broadway musicals focused on the problems of the famous American man on the street and his "woman," who happened to live in New York. Today, musicals have gone global. They are conceived with an eye toward universal themes, appealing to an international market. So there is another manifestation of decline and homogenization in our world of musicals.
