Joachim Raff (1822-1882) was a prolific German-Swiss composer, pedagogue, and pianist who enjoyed considerable fame during his lifetime but whose extensive oeuvre fell into relative obscurity in the late 20th century.


Born in Lachen, Switzerland, Raff was largely self-taught in music while working as a schoolmaster. His early compositions caught the attention of Felix Mendelssohn, who recommended them for publication. A pivotal moment in his career came when he met Franz Liszt, becoming his assistant in Weimar from 1850 to 1853. During this period, Raff significantly contributed to the orchestration of Liszt's symphonic poems.



After leaving Weimar, Raff dedicated himself to composition in Wiesbaden and later became the first director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt in 1878, where he fostered a progressive musical environment and employed renowned musicians like Clara Schumann.


Raff's musical output spanned almost every genre, including 11 symphonies, concertos for various instruments, operas, choral music, chamber music, and numerous piano works. His style, rooted in the Romantic era, initially showed influences of Mendelssohn and Schumann but later aligned with the "New German School" of Liszt and Wagner. Despite his contemporary recognition as a peer of Brahms and Wagner, his music is now less frequently performed, with the Cavatina for violin and piano being one of his most enduringly popular pieces.



His symphonies often carried descriptive titles, hinting at programmatic content, and his orchestral works are characterized by a strong sense of direction and effective orchestration. While his music was once highly esteemed, recent efforts are underway to reassess and revive interest in his substantial and varied compositional legacy.
