隨後,他於1987年創立了La Capella Reial de Catalunya(一個專注於18世紀以前音樂的聲樂團),並於1989年創立了Le Concert des Nations(一個古樂器樂團)。

Jordi Savall i Bernadet, born in 1941, is a towering figure in the world of Western early music. A Spanish conductor, composer, and, most notably, a virtuoso viol player (especially of the viola da gamba), Savall has dedicated his life to the rediscovery, research, and performance of forgotten musical treasures from the medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and even Classical periods.

His career, spanning over fifty years, has been instrumental in popularizing the viol family of instruments, which had largely fallen into oblivion. Savall's approach is characterized by a remarkable blend of rigorous historical accuracy and vibrant, emotional performance. He's not just about revival, but "imaginative reanimation" of historical music.

In 1974, he co-founded the ensemble Hespèrion XXI (originally Hespèrion XX) with his late wife, soprano Montserrat Figueras. He later went on to found La Capella Reial de Catalunya (a vocal ensemble focused on pre-18th-century music) in 1987, and Le Concert des Nations (a period-instrument orchestra) in 1989. Through these ensembles and his extensive recording career (over 230 discs, many on his own label, Alia Vox, founded in 1998), Savall has brought a vast and diverse repertoire to millions of listeners worldwide.

A significant boost to his international recognition came from his acclaimed contribution to the soundtrack of Alain Corneau's 1991 film "Tous les Matins du Monde," which centered on the lives of French Baroque composers Marin Marais and Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe. Beyond his musical achievements, Savall is also recognized for his efforts in promoting intercultural dialogue through music, collaborating with musicians from diverse backgrounds and exploring musical heritages from across the globe. He was appointed a UNESCO "Artist for Peace" in 2008 and a European Union Ambassador for intercultural dialogue.

Here are 10 often-mentioned music pieces or projects associated with Jordi Savall:

  1. "Canarios": This lively piece, often attributed to Gaspar Sanz or an anonymous composer, is a staple in Savall's repertoire and a frequent request at his concerts. His improvisational performances of "Canarios" are particularly celebrated.

  2. Music from "Tous les Matins du Monde" Soundtrack: This includes works by Marin Marais (such as Sonnerie de Ste Geneviève du Mont-de-Paris, Les Folies d'Espagne) and Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe (Concertos for Two Bass Viols). The film's success made these pieces widely known.

  3. Llibre Vermell de Montserrat: A collection of medieval songs and dances from the Montserrat monastery in Catalonia, Spain. Savall's recordings bring this unique and vibrant repertoire to life.

  4. Sephardic Romances/Music of the Sephardic Jews: Savall and Hespèrion XXI have extensively explored and recorded the rich musical heritage of the Sephardic Jews, highlighting the cultural crossroads of the Mediterranean.

  5. Folías Criollas (and Folías de España): Savall's exploration of the "Folia" theme, a popular musical pattern, across different cultures and centuries, including its "criolla" (Creole) variations.

  6. Music of Istanbul/Jerusalem/Armenia/The Balkans: Savall's projects often delve into the shared musical histories of specific regions, showcasing the diverse traditions and influences that have shaped their sounds.

  7. J.S. Bach: Sonatas for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord: A foundational work for the viola da gamba, Savall's interpretations are highly regarded for their depth and sensitivity.

  8. Claudio Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers) and L'Orfeo: Savall, with La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations, has made significant contributions to the performance and recording of Monteverdi's sacred and operatic masterpieces.

  9. Music of the Spanish Golden Age: His recordings often feature works by Spanish composers from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including those associated with courtly life and popular traditions.

  10. Diego Ortiz: Recercadas: These virtuosic improvisations and variations on popular tunes for viol are a showcase for Savall's technical mastery and improvisational flair.
